Learning Mosaic Knitting—Week 5

According to my learning plan, this week I’m supposed to be “reading and watching videos that explain how mosaic knitting actually works so that I can fix mistakes.” Ooooh boy, this couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s almost like I could see the future when I wrote that!

A Little Too Much Confidence

So, this week I started to feel a bit more confident with my project and had the confidence to not be glued to my pattern and chart at all times. Things were going swimmingly and I was actually starting to enjoy the project when the rug was pulled out from under me.

I’d been doing it wrong. For the previous three rows. And for context, a row takes me about half an hour to complete.

I watched this video which explains how to fix some mistakes in mosaic knitting. It was unfortunately the only resource I could find and while it was good information that might come in handy, it didn’t exactly explain how to fix my problem which was that I had done every stitch wrong for three rows in a row.

So, I was left to “tink” my knitting (a knitting term which means un-knitting something, can you guess why?). This requires some understanding of how the stitches are made as you need to undo them as they were done.

Change of Pace

By the time I was done fixing my work, I wanted a change of pace. I thought that creating a short animation loop of the process of knitting a stitch would be a way of continuing to understand the process of the stitch without actually having to do it for a little bit.

I studied the movement of my hands as a I knit for a while and then illustrated what I saw in procreate to create a short animation. Unfortunately the quality is quite poor because my iPad couldn’t handle exporting the file at its actual size, but I’m happy with the product and watching it gives me insight into the way my hands operate when I’m working on my shawl.
